NaNoWriMo 2008, We did it!
National Novel Writing Month is done for 2008 and Karen and I both completed our 50,000 words before last nights deadline. Karen finished up last week and I limped over the finishline yesterday thanks to her encouragement (it helps having a real writer in the house!). My approach was to write the minimum number of words per day and after missing three days in a row twice in the month I thought I was beat.
It was a very busy month. I started two new jobs, had a solo art exhibit, two Christmas Art and Craft sales, started math tutoring at the school where I also volunteer 2 part days a week and took a Knitting for Men workshop at my friend Carol's store Wabi Sabi among othere things, so I'm glad I was able to perservere. What I didn't do was keep up on email, or blogposts. I planned to put in a few progress reports along the way and that just didn't happen, so thanks for checking in!

Urban Art at Minto Park/Farmers' Market
Just a reminder that I will not be at the Ottawa Farmers' Market this Sunday (july 20th), but I will be returning the following week-July 27. My booth partner Katie, a.k.a Out of My Mind will also be absent from the Market this week. It will be business as usual at the Market after the Implosion at Frank Clair Stadium. This should be over with by 9 am. For an unforgettable Market Experience, why not stop by early, watch the dang thing blow up good, then grab yourself breakfast at the food tent and pick up your meat, baking and veggies on the way out?
On Saturday July 26th I will be at Urban Art in Minto Park, where I will be selling t-shirts as well as artwork .This is a great place to view the work of local artists and craftspeople right in the heart of Ottawa at Elgin and Gilmour streets.

Vernissage Today!
Well, the boys have been home from school for the last couple of days with sore throats. I took them with me to the gallery yesterday to drop off my work and they were inspired by all the monkey pictures there. When we got home they both did a couple of paintings, then this morning they painted another 23. That's right, twenty-three more paintings. We had so much work we decided to put on a show.
Homages to Jackson Pollock
No, I'm not kidding.
Arachnids
The one one the left: a tarantula; the one on the right: a portrait of Maman, the gigantic spider sculpture outside the National Gallery.
There is one more piece which has not been categorized. It is a parrot (no picture), which could have been included with either Pirates, or perhaps along with Cats as a household pet. Also, strangely absent from this body of work are dinosaurs.
Thanks for visiting our gallery.

Illustration Friday: Fail

Sometimes I think even the man of steel feels that he fails to live up to expectations.
Normally I like to make something new for IF, but when I read the topic, "fail", this collage book I made in 2006 popped into my head. That year, Karen & I and our friend Katie, decided to make a book a week to send to one another. The book itself is made from an 8.5 X11 sheet that is folded and cut to make an 8-page book. Each of the frames is one page and the double frame is in the centre of the book. Man of Futile Words (copyright 2006) is what I call my small press and the last frame is the back cover of the book. I reformatted it here to make it easier to read, but here's what it looks like when the book is folded out flat:
The pictures for this were all cut from a Walmart flyer.
Here is a diagram of how to make a one page book. To see some of my friend Katie's books, check out: http://plasticmasters.blogspot.com/search?q=one+page+books

Some days everyone else seems sooo interesting.
I was tempted to post a cartoon from 2006 from a series of mini-books I did entitled Mr. Bland, but then I'd be breaking both a New Years resolution and a pact to post something new every week. Here is that cartoon in addition to this weeks IF post on the topic: Plain.

Craft Shows
Some day I'll sit down and count the number of craft shows, markets, fairs, trade shows and folk festivals we've sold at since 1989. We've been to school fairs, Legions, city halls, barns, malls, conservation areas, fields, hockey rinks, convention centres and museums. We have been set up in sun, rain, snow, sleet, hail and mud up to our ankles.
When it's not busy at a festival, vendors come together to cogitate on reasons for poor sales. The weather can be either too bad or too good. Everyone is on holidays or at some sporting event. Not enough publicity, etc., etc., etc.
I was trading stories with another vendor at the folk festival this weekend and I recalled the year we sold at the Virgil Stampede. It was pretty much what you'd expect from a small town stampede, but how a craft show ended up being part of the event I'll never know. The highlite for me (this was before the year 2000) was meeting the ageing Elvis Impersonator Elvis now,as he would be in the new Millennium. He even had this painted on the side of his mini-van in gold letters. I helped the sweaty King carry his monitor to the stage and he of course said Thankye v'ry much.
I made this comic/collage, pre 2000. It might be amusing only to other artisans, or maybe just to me. I'm a real luddite, so this is written in the SNL school of sci-fi.

Art in Strathcona Park 2007
The mini-books were part of a project where Katie, Karen and I made each other a book every week for a year. We didn't make it through the entire year, but I think we made about 90 books between the three of us. Thanks to Katie for bringing the 4 litre jug of water today
which we polished off before 5 o'clock.
By the way, if you see this woman behind a camera, LOOK OUT! You may become a subject for one of one of her books, or a painting, or show up on her blog.
